Developing a good strategy for unpacking begins well before moving day. One of the wisest things you can do to make moving day easier is to create an essentials box. This is a box of items that you will need for your first night in your new home. If you have several persons in your household, you can create an essentials box for each person. Make sure that your essentials box is clearly labeled and placed in a location that will make it easy to find. In such a way, you will have important personal items on hand without needing to sort through many boxes to go in search of items.
The next important step to stress-free unpacking happens during the move-in process. As you get to move furniture and boxes into your new home, be sure to take the time to place each item in the correct room. One useful way is to label, number or color-code your boxes to make them easy to identify. Give each room a name, number, or color, and mark the boxes that belong to that room. Accordingly, everyone helping with the move can help you sort your boxes and furniture into the rooms where they should be, saving you a lot of time and frantic searching afterward.
With your boxes correctly placed in their designated rooms, your next step is to prioritize which rooms and items should be unpacked first. Some items that are, in many cases, among the priority list include personal hygiene items, important papers, computers, charging cords, and cleaning supplies. Lower priority items might consist of books, home décor, or collectibles. Unpack these items when you have the higher-priority rooms sorted through and organized.

Based on how much time you have and how much stuff you need to unpack, it can take several days or even weeks to get everything absolutely sorted out and put away. A favorable approach is to focus on one room at a time, making sure to unpack everything in that room before moving on to the next. By planning out a realistic schedule, you can efficiently see your progress and restrain from feeling too overwhelmed by all the things you have to do.
